In Situ is a testbed, "... a system that aids in evaluating computational models of learning, including artificial neural networks. The testbed models contingencies of reinforcement using an extension of Mechner's (1959) notational system for the description of behavioral procedures."
Kemp, S. M., & Eckerman, D. A. (2001). Situational Descriptions of Behavioral Procedures: The In Situ Testbed. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 75, 135-164.
Article is available online from JEAB's Electronic Articles.
The In Situ Behavioral Procedure Testbed, or just In Situ Testbed for the sake of brevity, has been the work of Steve Kemp, a Behavior Analyst on faculty at the University of North Carolina. Steve has been working on this line of research years, and has related publications going back to 1995 (see Steve's home page for more background).
The intent of the testbed is to facilitate testing, and in particular, comparison of models, as described by Church:
Church, R. M. (1997). Quantitative Models of Animal Learning and Cognition. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, 23, 4, 379-389.
Also see "Project Description" on the Plan page.
InSitu will be an "open source" style project. For interesting discussion of open source, see Eric Raymond's famous "The Cathedral and the Bazaar", and the criticism by Nikolai Bezroukov, "A Second Look at the Cathedral and the Bazaar".
For the time being the project is Steve Kemp's, and the rest of us have volunteered to help him out. Once the project is more established, Steve will open it up to more folks.
